Clifford Berryman (American, 1869-1949) Oh, Doctor, I'll Do Anything You Say, Washington Star newspaper cartoon, November 19, 1934 India ink on heavyweight paper 12 x 14-1/4 inches (30.5 x 36.2 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Berryman Clifford Kennedy Berryman was the lead editorial cartoonist of the Washington Star (D.C.) newspaper who satirized Democrats and Republicans in his coverage of a vast range of subjects ranging over fifty-plus years of work. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1944. In 1898, during the Spanish-American War he drew the classic illustration titled "Remember the Maine" and in 1902 he depicted President Theodore Roosevelt showing compassion for a small bear cub. The latter inspired the creation of the teddy bear. Mr. Berryman was a draftsman in the U.S. Patent Office before joining the staff of the Washington Post in 1891. He became the paper's lead political cartoonist in 1896 and in 1907 left for the Washington Star where he found a home until his death in 1949. This handsome original was published on the front page of the Star on November 19, 1934, early in the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The President was regularly portrayed in the press as "Dr. Roosevelt" when referring to his efforts to fix America's ailing economy. Here he is seen in that role, attending to his patient, the very sick "Business" who vows to "do anything you say" as long as he doesn't let "Congress...the ol' girl...get hold of me!"
