Clinton Adams (American, 1918–2002) was an influential American painter, printmaker, educator, and arts administrator known for his major contributions to modernist lithography and Southwestern abstraction. Closely associated with the Tamarind Lithography Workshop and later the Tamarind Institute, Adams played an important role in the revival of fine art lithography in the United States during the mid-20th century. He served as Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico and authored several important publications on lithography and printmaking. His works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Norton Simon Museum.

Nocturne, 1965, is a color lithograph on white Arches wove paper, printed by Garo Antreasian and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. Catalogued as Tamarind 1303 and Conway 81, the vertical composition places a muted gold circular form within a narrow band of light blue, bordered by broad, richly textured fields of darker blue scattered with pale dots and cloudy passages suggestive of a moon against a night sky. Inscribed in graphite “Tamarind Impression” lower left and signed and dated “Clinton Adams ’65” lower right, with the Tamarind and UNM blindstamps in the lower margin. The “Tamarind Impression” inscription identifies this as a workshop-retained impression rather than a numbered impression from the regular edition. Verso inscribed “S-49” and “1303.” Sheet measures approximately 20 x 13.125 inches. Overall very good appearance. Light toning with a faint mat line to the margins and two old tape hinges at the upper verso. Colors remain strong and the image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
