Clinton Adams (American, 1918–2002) was an influential American painter, printmaker, educator, and arts administrator known for his major contributions to modernist lithography and Southwestern abstraction. Closely associated with the Tamarind Lithography Workshop and later the Tamarind Institute, Adams played an important role in the revival of fine art lithography in the United States during the mid-20th century. He served as Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico and authored several important publications on lithography and printmaking. His works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Norton Simon Museum.

Cleft, 1965, is a lithograph printed in black and gray on cream wove paper. The composition centers on a narrow vertical opening that divides a densely worked rectangular field, with the surrounding tones fading from deep charcoal above to pale gray below. Inscribed in graphite “Tamarind Impression” lower left and signed and dated “Clinton Adams ’65” lower right. Tamarind workshop blindstamps appear in the lower margin, and a Tamarind watermark is visible in the sheet. Sheet measures approximately 22.25 x 15 inches; image measures approximately 15.25 x 8.875 inches. Overall good appearance. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
