Clive Francis was originally inspired by Ronald Searle's theatre caricatures in 1950s Punch issues. His oeuvre comprises prominent theatre performers and producers, and actors performing in Shakespeare plays. His love for theatrical subjects draws comparisons with American cartoonist Al Hirschfield (1903-2003).
