[ translate ]

Cloyd Sweigert (American, 1897-1973) The Honeymoon Is Over, San Francisco Chronicle newspaper cartoon, March 30, 1934 India ink on heavyweight paper 12-1/2 x 11-3/4 inches (31.8 x 29.8 cm) (image) Signed and dated lower right: Sweigert 34 Cloyd Jonathan "C. J." Sweigert was a California native educated at UC Berkeley and UC Davis in agriculture. However, he taught himself to draw and paint, and first worked at the San Francisco News, then came on staff at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1932 as an editorial cartoonist. He remained with the Chronicle to his retirement in 1955. The Honeymoon Is Over was published in the Chronicle on March 30, 1934, and humorously (even timelessly) marks the Congressional override of President Roosevelt's veto of the Independent Offices Appropriations Act on March 28. It was the first override of his presidency. This bill restored pay reductions for federal employees and benefits for veterans, measures FDR took to curb government spending and maintain fiscal responsibility in his first year in office.
