Cobaltite Tunaberg Cu-Co Ore Field, Tunaberg, Nyköping, Södermanland...

[ translate ]

Cobaltite Tunaberg Cu-Co Ore Field, Tunaberg, Nyköping, Södermanland County, Sweden "Two sharp cubic silvery cobaltite crystals up to about a cm growing on a piece of massive ore. They must have been very lucky for these crystals to have survived without damage when they broke away the massive ore. I traded this specimen from the George Vaux collection at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia when Harold Arndt was curator of the collections there." - Rock H. Currier Rock's point about luck is well taken: for every fine Cobaltite that lived through the blasting, mucking, tramming, and sorting, there had to have been dozens, if not hundreds, that were casually hammered into pitiable remnants of their former perfection. Tunaberg was the historic locality for Cobaltite. The world situation for Cobaltite has now changed, as Tunaberg is now just one of the world's localities. That said, this is the locality that put Cobaltite into many a museum collection. This classic Cobaltite specimen has a custom labeled acrylic base and is accompanied by the original Vaux labels. Overall Measurements: 2.4 x 2.2 x 1.8 inches (6.0 x 5.5 x 4.5 cm). Offered at no reserve Provenance: Ex. Bryn Mawr College, Ex. George Vaux Collections [RHC #1882, acquired 1973] [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
