Coins of the Carlisle Mint from the John Mattinson

Overstruck on a coin of Henry I, type XV, of the moneyer Wilealme, nearly very fine, extremely rare £3,000-£4,000

Two other Henric/Wilealme coins are known. One is in the Fitzwilliam Museum (Conte collection, CM.1235-2001), recorded as Henry of Nothumberland (the son of David I of Scotland). The other appeared in DNW Auction 69, 15 March 2006, lot 1318, catalogued as of Henry I. If it is correct that these are coins of Henry I then they introduce a new moneyer for the type. Hitherto Erebald was the only known moneyer for Henry I type XV from Carlisle. If, on the other hand, they are minted in the name of Henry of Northumberland they possibly represent some of the very earliest Scottish coins minted at Carlisle
