Colima Autlan Pottery Standing Male Figure

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Autlan type, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery male figure shown standing atop petite feet and delineated legs, all while holding both arms tightly atop his abdomen. The man wears a loincloth decorated with a pair of tassels on one side as well as a necklace with a pair of large gourd-shaped vessels, and pairs of scarification bands are incised on his biceps just below his shoulders. His countenance presents with deeply incised eyes, a slender nose, and bared teeth that are perhaps marked with ritual perforations, all beneath a simple cap with thick lappets. Size: 1.6" W x 5.375" H (4.1 cm x 13.7 cm); 6.125" H (15.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Anne and Kirk Douglas collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1953 to the 1970s, thence by descent
