Colima Pottery Cacique in Litter w/ Umbrella

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery figure of an elder cacique sitting within the cavity of an inverted, bell-shaped litter. The figure dons a bicorn headdress indicative of social importance, holds a flared fan in his right hand to cool him off during hot days, and rests in front of a tall umbrella held aloft by a slender pole. Size: 5.5" W x 3.9" H (14 cm x 9.9 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Roy Oswald collection, Arizona, USA, acquired between 1960 to 2004

Condition Report: Litter repaired from a few large pieces with restoration along back of plinth and midsection of covering, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Original umbrella pole missing but replaced by wooden pole in modern times. Light encrustations and abrasions to litter, figure, and umbrella, with fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
