Colima Redware Portrait Vessel

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An impressive pottery vessel in the form of an anthropomorphic head with a flat, circular base and a large, flared neck that opens to an ovoid rim, all coated in a lustrous hue of burnt sienna. Flanked by a pair of protruding ears with annular drill holes for hanging ornaments, the naturalistic visage displays a petite pair of bulging, ovoid eyes above a wide nose, and closed mouth. Size: 6.25" L x 4.5" W x 5.625" H (15.9 cm x 11.4 cm x 14.3 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired 1995 to 2015
