Colima Shell Bead Necklace + Mezcala Stone Bead Strand

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Chontal and Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE; West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pair of ancient stone and shell beads gathered together; one as a strand and the other as a stylish necklace, both strung in modern times on modern cords. The first strand is a collection of 22 hand-pecked and polished greenstone beads with cylindrical barrel forms and a central white stone pendant. The other is a necklace, which consists of dozens of hand-carved white and pink Spondylus shell beads with petite seed beads of both shell and greenstone. Size (greenstone strand doubled): 32" L (81.3 cm); (largest stone bead): 2.25" L x 0.5" W (5.7 cm x 1.3 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Condition Report: The large stone beads are strung in modern times on a modern cord- but need to be restrung if intending to wear. Chips and abrasions throughout, and light earthen deposits. Shell necklace is strung in modern times on a cord and wearable as is but can easily be restrung. Expected nicks and chips to beads, but intact and very good.
