Colima Spondylus Shell Figural Pendant
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A special anthropomorphic pendant made from the sacred Spondylus shell! The shell is carved with a slightly curved profile into an abstract figure standing with arms to the sides. The head has protruding ears and shallow hand drilled cavities for a mouth and eyes. Two string-cut lines create a V across the face. Surmounted on the brow is a suspension loop. The Spondylus has an orange and umber hue, with a polished area across the upper body. Size: 2.5" L x 0.875" W (6.4 cm x 2.2 cm)
Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
