By Nash, David [British Artist, Sculptor, Photographer]
Unpublished photos and archives of one of the most famous living British artist. Three (3) Photographs, twelve (12) Autograph Letters Signed (ALS) sent to Neil Hanson- a total of 16 pages of text -, with seven (7) Small Drawings, one (1) Manuscript CV, two (2) Exhibition Agreements / Contracts and the Exhibition Book. A most interesting run of correspondence and photographs from the British artist/ sculptor/ photographer David Nash. Writing on a variety of paper types, Nash responds positively to the offer of an exhibition in 1982 from Neil Hanson, then working as the Exhibitions Officer at Carlisle Museum and Art Gallery. Our collection shows an interesting insight of all the work, creative process and financial details leading to Nash's participation in the Exhibition. Nash discusses the details of his proposed Land Art work in Grizedale forest, noting that "Not being gallery-tied I have made it a policy to adjust the price to the circumstances - Sing a song and pass the hat - the Journeyman artist". Nash also writes about the planning of his participation, including financial arrangements ("Two jobs for the price of one?"), the design (small drawings) and the purchase by the Gallery of his commissioned artwork to be executed and exhibited (for 1,000 BP for the Wood and Stone Stove Sculptures), the shipping aspects (small drawings), and finally the material and layout (small drawing) for the Exhibition Book. Included are three (3) important large black & white photographs by Nash, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (16,5 x 24,1 cm") on sheets 8 x 10 inches (20,2 x 25,3 cm) with title, place and date, accompanied by two (2) transmission letters written in ink and signed by Nash presenting the works ("Two Cumbrian Stoves, Wood and Stone - 1981" and "two more photos .", but one present): [1] Peat Bank Stove, Ffestiniog, 1979; [2] Oakwood Stove, Tan-y-Bwlch, 1980; [3] Biesbos Stove, Clay and sticks, Rhine Delta 1981. // In addition, Nash's own handwritten CV (that was used to prepare a résumé about him in the Exhibition Book), a handwritten contract with Hanson and a printed Exhibition Agreement accomplished in manuscript for "An art work documenting a landscape sculpture installation to be carried out in the winter of 1981/82 in Cumbria specifically made for the "Cumbrian landscape" show". The artist writes an additional clause stating he will supply an artwork documenting the installation (a drawing entitled "Earth, air, fire, and water, A meeting of ways" shown in the Book). The exhibition was held at the Carlisle Museum and Art Gallery between July 2nd and August 29th 1982, and resulted in the Exhibition Book "Presences of Nature, Words and Images of the Lake District" edited by the Curator Neil Hanson in 1982 (included in this collection). Four (4) photographs of Nash were printed in this Book, including two (2) of Stone Stoves, taken in Grizedale Forest, Cumbria (Lake District). The photographs present in our collection were not selected, even if cropping lines appear on them. Born in 1945, Nash has worked worldwide with wood, trees and the natural environment. Nice set.
