Colombia Tairona Pottery Snake Effigy Whistle

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A charming miniature brownware effigy whistle, featuring a serpent; in curled, constricting position, head and body with wonderful incised detailing of diamond-motifs. The patterning is indicative of a viper or other poisonous serpent, like the South American rattlesnake. Upon the back is a short mouth piece with a narrow neck and two additional openings at the neck base for emitting sound. A charming representation of a creature often associated with powerful deities! Size: 2.25" Diameter x 2" H (5.7 cm x 5.1 cm)
Provenance: private southern California collection, USA, bestowed 2006; ex-J. Malter collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2006
