Colombian Muisca Tumbaga Figure Seated on Throne

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Muisca culture, ca. 1200 to 1538 CE. A charming, small tumbaga figure dominated by its large head with suncrest headdress, depicted as sitting on a throne. The figure is seated, knees drawn up, with the hands raised up as if holding an offering. This type of figure is known as a tunjo, meant as an offering to communicate with the gods. They are found deposited in Lake Guatavita and other important bodies of water in the region, buried in caches, as grave ornaments, and at the entrances to temples. Size: 1.4" W x 2.7" H (3.6 cm x 6.9 cm); tumbaga is 62% copper, 35% gold, and 3% silver; total weight: 25.3 grams

Provenance: ex-Denenberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles, California, USA acquired pre-1970
