Title/Content of Map: Colton's Map of the United States of America,
Cartographer: COLTON, JOSEPH HUTCHINS
Date: 1853
Publisher: J.H. COLTON
Size: 57Height - 51Width

"the British Provinces, Mexico and the West Indies. Showing the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean." Martin and Martin 43 (1854 issue); Wheat 747, 799. One of the most widely disseminated and influential maps of the country of its time. Fascinating view of the West prior to the Gadsden Purchase and the Kansas-Nebraska Act which established the northern border of Kansas Territory. Arizona not yet shown, Nevada not yet shown in a large Utah Territory, a large Northwest Territory includes Dakotas and Montana and Wyoming. Colorado part of Nebraska Territory where a note states that all civilized tribes of Indians now appoint a principal Chief who conducts their negotiations with the government. Also railroads, emigrant's trails, towns, forts, and topography. This wall map is noted for the many small steel engraved vignettes of native American animals and ships that adorn its surface. Old rebacking with some moisture damage to margins. Later margin binding. Some flaking, cracking and loose spots. Rods not original on this the wall version. There was also a folding state. The 1851 version of this map established the present borders of Texas and the various issues responded to the demand for reliable data on the emerging West. Inexpensive example of landmark 1850s wall map. Wall Map With Vignettes of Ships; Natives Hunting Buffalo on Horseback, Hopi Indian Snake Dance, etc.
