Stanley William Hayter etching printed in colour made in 1953. It was also titled 'Battle'. Signed and numbered 'HC XVIII' in pencil by the artist; ' H.C.' is the French annotation which stands for hors commerce, or "not to sell." It lovely rich impression and in good condition.Plate size 300 x 201mmSheet size: Large margins. Ref: Black & Moorehead 210.Similar to an artist's proof, this proof was set aside from the editioned prints. H.C. status is not mentioned in Moorhead and Black-see below. They state that there were 4 states to this etching. The soft ground etching was made on a copper plate with engraving and scorper, printed in colours. Some of the different states were printed on different papers. There were 10 artist proofs plus the edition of 220 copies which were printed by Hayter and Atelier 17 on Marais paper. Published by La Guilde Internationale de la Gravure, Geneva.Similar to an artist's proof, this proof was set aside from the editioned prints.
