This Baoulé fetish statuette represents the spirit of nature its position allows to determine that it is an initiation fetish and its groutese patina, The Baoulés are one of the most important ethnic groups in Côte d'Ivoire. Their name reflects their origin: according to a legend, Queen Aba Pokou guided her people in exodus to the regions of the gold mines during the 18th century; she had to sacrifice her son to the god of a river so that she could cross it. The people were therefore called the "Bauli", which means: "the son is dead".
