Miniatuur commode - Commode - Mahogany

[ translate ]

A Dutch miniature chest of drawers made during the late Empire/early Biedermeier period around 1820-1830.

Such pieces of furniture are often referred to as "masterpieces" that were made as a test of aptitude by a student as a final project. However, this is not the case and students had to produce a normal sized piece of furniture. Many furniture makers also traveled around the country and offered their services at markets (to produce a custom piece of furniture locally) . This chest of drawers was presented together with other miniature pieces of furniture to show the model, possibilities, etc. that the furniture maker could produce.

The piece of furniture is made of solid mahogany, the interior of the drawers are made of pine wood and the drawer runners & back are made of poplar wood.
The sleek & simple shape is typical of the Empire style and the design of the front posts that flank the drawers indicates the new fashion of the (early) Biedermeier period. The piece of furniture is simply constructed, just glue and nails. The four well-functioning drawers have the original brass knobs, the key entrances were once lost. The entire piece of furniture has a warm orange-brown color and satin gloss.
