Carnwath is a moorland village on the southern edge of the Pentland Hills of South Lanarkshire. Around the time this plate was in service, the 5th Earl of Carnwath (Robert Dalzell) lost his title and was imprisoned for treason during the Jacobite uprising in 1715.
