Confederate Bowie Knife from the Blockade Runner Modern Greece
Confederate bowie knife, purportedly recovered from the Blockade Runner Modern Greece. 9-1/2” blade, with 4-1/2” handle. Excavated condition. The Modern Greece was a British-owned iron screw steam freighter that served as a Confederate blockade runner during the American Civil War. On June 27, 1862, pursued by Union gunboats off the North Carolina coast, it ran aground and sank near Fort Fisher State Historic Site close to the Cape Fear River.
