Confederate Secretary of War James A. Seddon ALS Civil War Date Pass Through The Lines For Bearing a Flag of Truce!
JAMES A. SEDDON (1815-1880). Confederate Secretary of War from 1862 until February 1865, American lawyer and politician, served two terms as a Representative in the U.S. Congress, appointed Confederate States Secretary of War by Jefferson Davis during the American Civil War.
February 9, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Autograph Letter Signed, "James A. Seddon" as Secretary of War, on official "Confederate States of America War Department" printed letterhead, at Richmond, Choice Very Fine. Here, the CSA Secretary of War personally issues a Pass through the lines, Bearing a Flag of Truce! This letter is written on a 5" x 8" sheet, written in rich deep brown ink and vividly signed, all in James Seddon's hand. It reads, in full:
"Confederate States of America - War Department, - Richmond, Va. - Feby 9th, 1863 -- On the recommendation of the Hon. Wm. Hill of Georgia Mrs Mr A Wilson and Mss G.C. Wilson are authorised (sic) to pass by Boat bearing a flag of Truce on Permission pass through the lines of Gen'l Lee's Army to the United States. -- (Signed) James A. Seddon, Secty of War".
The excellent content of this Letter, combined with it's choice appearance and mentioning of "bearing a flag of Truce" and to "pass through the lines of Gen'l Lee's Army to the United States" makes this a very historic item. A superior content Civil War CSA issued Pass Signed "James A. Seddon" as Secretary of War.
JAMES A. SEDDON, a Richmond, Virginia lawyer, was a United States Representative from Virginia from 1845 to 1847 and again from 1849 to 1851. He was a member of the Peace Convention held in Washington, D. C., in 1861, and when that effort failed he was elected as a Virginia Delegate to the Provisional Confederate Congress. He was appointed Secretary of War by Confederate President Jefferson Davis and served from 1862 to 1865. Arrested by Union forces in May 1865, he was imprisoned for seven months.
