LOT 83281279  |  Catalogue: Clocks

Congreve rolling ball clock - Bronzed brass movement under a glass housing - 1990-2000

[ translate ]

Brass skeleton clock with fusee movement under a glass house.
White enamelled dials.
Very nice reproduction of a Congreve Roller Ball - produced
In China.

Instead of a pendulum, it is driven by a ball that goes back and forth over a brass tableau - "rolling ball".
The ball travels there in 12 seconds and back in 12 seconds.
Clock face for hours and minutes.
Wooden base 28 cm x 27 cm.
Total height 40 cm.

The Rolling Ball Clock was patented by Sir William Congreve in 1808.
The basic concept is that the ball takes 12 to 30 seconds to travel along the zigzag track, which causes the escapement to move. This reverses the angle of the box and the hands move forward accordingly.

How it works is on You Tube:
https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=EVS4Ocy. Js. Qw

The 8-day movement is protected by a square glass bell.
The timepiece stands on a wooden console with three adjustable ball feet.
Snekuurwerk has been checked by a watchmaker and functions.

Ideally, the ball would always take exactly the same amount of time to roll around the court, but it doesn't. Any trace of dust will get in the way of the ball rolling and slow it down - and even under a glass dome or in a suitcase there is dust. In addition, the metal expands or contracts along with temperature changes, changing the length of the course and the size of the ball. Therefore, the clock will never run exactly on time.
Clock comes with winding key.

The lot will be sent in two packages of 8 kg (glass bell separately) , registered and insured, so slightly higher shipping costs. Shipping costs outside Europe have increased significantly (€3. 60 per kg) , due to the Corona crisis.
