Born in Dusseldorf, Kiesel was a successful painter and sculptor, working in both Munich and Berlin. Much of his genre work reflects an interest in the exoticism of the East. The present lot, Kiesel's westernised interpretation of a harem scene, was a composition that the artist returned to several times in his career.
