Continental School, 18th/19th Century Style

Allegorical Scene
Unsigned.
Oil on canvas, 66 x 47 in. (167.6 x 119.4 cm), framed
Condition: Mounted onto board, craquelure, scattered losses and retouch throughout, accretions, nailed to board along perimeter of composition.

Provenance: The painting was purchased at an estate auction on Riverside Road in Byram, New York, in 1979 by the current owner. The Estate belonged to Mr. Stendhal (or Stenvall) who acquired the painting at Bukowski's Auction in Helsinki, Finland, in 1954. An accompanying black and white photograph has been misplaced that bore a written attribution to Van Dyck by Claire Stenvall (or Stenvall, or Stendhal). The painting has been in the possession of the current owner for about 40 years.

N.B. The composition is similar in spirit to the painting Amor vincit omnia by Paul de Vos (Flemish, 1595-1678) in collaboration with Jan van den Hoecke (Dutch, 1611-1651). The similarity was pointed out in a letter from Hans M. Cramer, dated May 5, 1998, referencing the collaborative work in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna by Paul de Vos and J. v.d. Hoecke. In a letter dated June 18, 1980, Julius Held drew a tentative parallel for the figure of Cupid to Jan van den Hoecke.

PDF copies of these letters will accompany the lot.

Estimate $1,000-2,000

Frame dimensions 72 1/2 x 53 1/2 in.

A series of white colored drips of an unknown origin on the canvas that also occur along the top of the frame. The dark splotches along the side of Cupid fluoresce under UV. There are multiple areas of retouch throughout the composition, consisting mainly of many small dots and dashes. The reverse of the mounting board has been covered with canvas. Nail heads are visible at irregular intervals along the perimeter of the sides and bottom edges of the composition.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
