(4to) 28.5x22.5 cm (11¼x8¾), period calf, raised bands, morocco lettering pieces.Official account of Cook's second voyage, detailing his search for the great Antarctic continent, written by himself, although he left on his third voyage before the book was printed so that he was never able to see the finished product. Superbly illustrated with, in Cook's words, "about sixty copper plates, which, I am of opinion, will exceed every thing that has been done in a work of this kind." The plates and maps in the present copy are indeed striking, crisp with deep, dark impressions.
Condition Report: Binding moderately scuffed, front boards and endpapers loose, rear shaken; text generally clean, plates offsetting, several with ragged edges, large folding charts with adhesive strip repairs; overall a very good set.
