Cooper (Gary)

[ translate ]

Cooper (Gary) Typed letter signed ('Gary') on personalise stationery, addressed to Tony Curtis, reading "I left for Sun Valley immediately after that grand and glorious testimonial the Friars gave me. I sort of had to get to the mountains to get my feet on the ground. Watching the skiers do egg beaters down the mountain made my head stop spinning from the flattery of it all. That accounts for the time lag in thanking you for all you did. I will be forever grateful to you for your presence on the dais and your good words at the microphone", one page, light yellowing to margins, 4to, n.p., 9 February 1961. ***Friars on East 55th Street in New York is a private club founded in 1904. Its members comprise mostly theatre and film people. The club has become known for its annual 'roast' - a testimonial dinner during which a celebrity is subjected to an evening of gushing praise couple with good-natured mickey-taking from friends and colleagues. Gary Cooper's turn had come on 8 January 1961. Tony Curtis was the last speaker before Cooper rose to reply. Other tributes had come from Audrey Hepburn, Dean Martin, Sam Goldwyn and Jack Benny. At that time Cooper was suffering from cancer, which was spreading. He was too ill to attend the Academy Awards in April, so his close friend James Stewart accepted the honorary Oscar on his behalf. A month later, on 13 May 1961, Cooper died aged 60.
