Copper Kozuka by Hamano Noriyuki
Decorated with a figure holding a long staff, modeled in pronounced relief within the narrow surface of the piece. A crane in flight appears above, while the facial features, folds of the robe, and movement of the limbs are carefully articulated, giving the composition a strong sculptural presence.Below the figure, vertically arranged flowing-water motifs lead the eye through the composition and lend the design a sense of upward movement. The figure, water, and crane are arranged in a clear and balanced sequence, while contrasting tones of metal decoration define the individual elements without overwhelming the restrained ground. The precise combination of relief work and inlay demonstrates refined control within a particularly limited format.Hamano Noriyuki was a metalworker associated with the Hamano school, active from the late Edo into the Meiji period. He was known for detailed figural subjects and accomplished chisel work, qualities clearly reflected in the modeling and disciplined composition of this kozuka. Length: 9.7cm
