Coptic Textile Funerary Robe Fragments (3)

Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Three fine textile fragments of funerary robes displayed in individual wooden frames. The two matching mirrored fragments feature a stylized goat with a raised tail within a pair of white ovals, and each oval is sewn to a rectangular, crimson-hued panel. The largest textile features a quartet of dancers within the spaces of a cruciform central body, and a register of inversely corresponding wave motifs create the dark framework within the cream-hued body. Display frames included. Size of largest (dancers): 7.4" W x 8.125" H (18.8 cm x 20.6 cm); (frame): 11.25" W x 11.75" H (28.6 cm x 29.8 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired in Cairo in the mid 1900s
