Corneille (1922-2010) - Célébration de la Naissance et arbre de la vie - Gravure sur cuivre au sucre
Retrospective Guillaume Corneille in Belgium in 2024.
Beautiful etching from 1998 by the painter Guillaume Corneille (1922-2010) , born in Liège to Dutch parents) , founding member of the Cobra movement, with Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Christian Dotremont, Hugo Claus, Jacques Doucet and Alechinsky.
In the 1990s, Guillaume Corneille adopted a clear and confident line. The painter tried to capture Modernity through the intensity of the line in the tradition of Matisse and Picasso. Here he draws a pregnant woman who, with the complicity of a cat, is about to give birth and a bird flies around a tree (the "bird-plane") . He is reminiscent of David Hockney in this same sense of selection of detail and in the frank gesture of the hand, both erudite painters and keen on art history.
Celebration of Motherhood - Technique: Copper engraving with sugar, for a vivid and permanent color effect - Large format: 46 x 36 cm. The cat is one of Guillaume Corneille's pets.
Signed and dated in pencil by the artist - Numbered artist's copy EA 2/10
