Raaphorst was born Oktober 2, 1875 in Nieuwkoop and died January 24, 1954 in Wassenaar. Depiction: Five playing kittens in interior on a draped rug with cushions. Oil on canvas. Much more beautiful in reality than on photograph. Cornelis Raaphorst lived and worked mainly in Wassenaar during his entire life. The painter came from an old farmer family from Wassenaar and lived in a modest home in the ‘Hallekenstraat’ in Wassenaar. Initially, Cornelis Raaphorst specialized in still lives, later in flowers and landscapes. After that he specialized in his well-known ‘kitty’ paintings, which eventually made him famous. He painted, just like Henriette Ronner-Knip, preferably playing young kittens. He often depicted them with colourful drapes or musical instruments and Raaphorst became very familiar for his cat paintings at his time. Today his work is still extremely popular. Even in a museum in London hangs a "kitten" painting of the painter. This has been different, placed in the light of the time in which Cornelis Raaphorst lived.
