Cornelius Johnson (Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen) (British 1593-1661)
Portrait of a gentleman, half-length
Oil on panel
Signed with initials and dated 1625 lower right
72.5 x 61cm (28½ x 24 in.)
Provenance:
A.F.L.P. Wallace, Candacraig, Strathdon, and by descent;
Sale, Christie's London, 6 September 2001, Lot 12
Plaish Hall, Church Stretton, Shropshire
Condition Report:
The work has been cradled. There are two vertical light cracks either side of the sitter's head running the full length of the panel. There is an additional crack at the upper right quadrant with some overpaint visible in natural light. Light rubbing to the framing edges. Infilled craquelure partially visible to the sitter's face and ruff in natural light. There are a number of very fine yellow/gold splatters which appear to be paint scattered throughout, largely the dark oval background. There are three surface scratches to the right of the sitter's head and a further deeper scratch with associated loss approx. 5mm above the sitter's left eye. Inspection under UV reveals retouching throughout, however further retouching appears to have been masked by a green cloudy varnish.
