Collation: [4], 154, [4], 26, [14]pp. Engraved half-title, frontispiece (“Gli Argonautiâ€), title-page, 2 divisional titles (“Gli Argonauti†and “Idrografiaâ€), portrait of Francesco Morosini, 49 exceptionally fine double-page maps and plates, including a plate illustrating the great globe built for Louis XIV, 2 plates showing the northern and southern polar calottes for the three-and a half foot globes and 2 full-page engraved maps; 4 full-page maps and plates; 16 full-page plates each with 2 subjects within separately printed engraved borders, 2 illustrations in the text, fine engraved vignette head-pieces and initials. Contemporary vellum over paste-board (front turn-in lifting, rubbed).
Provenance: 19th-century engraved North Library bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield on the front paste-down dated 1860, discreet blind-stamps on first three leaves. “More than a collection of maps... it is a compendium of geological, cosmographical and scientific information.. of contemporary Italian science and geography†(The World Encompassed p.195). A fine atlas, full of magnificent maps and plates, including double-page plates of: the celebrated globe built for Louis XIV; a comparison of the Ptolemaic, Descartesian, Copernican and Braheian systems of the universe; the system of the Universe according to Sebastian Venier surrounded by fine vignettes of hemispheres depicting the New World; celestial charts; very detailed scenes of ships and sailing vessels from all corners of the globe. The maps include: “Planisfero del mondo vecchio, ...†showing the emerging Australian coastline including the discoveries of Tasman; “Planisfero del mondo nuovo,...†showing North and South America, the emerging coastline of New Zealand, and van Dieman’s Land; a large map of Asia in two sheets which depicts the coastline of Nuova Hollanda after the discoveries of Tasman, Terra d’Antonio Diemans, and Nuova Zeelandia; “America Settentrionale...†in two sheets showing California as an Island; “America Meridionale...†in two sheets; “Terre Artiche..†showing the northern coastline of America of Baffins Bay and Labrador; “Oceano Scitico, Settentrionale, e Glaciale†showing hunting and whaling scenes; “Polo Australe, o Meridionale, & Antartico†with a fine and elaborate cartouche surrounding a description of Magellan’s discoveries, but no land mass; “Mare del sud detto altrimenti Mare Pacifico...†showing the emerging coastlines of Carpentaria, Tasmania, and New Zealand; “Mare del Nord†showing the Atlantic coastlines of America and Africa; “Bocche del Fiume Negro et Isole di Capo Verde†showing the Sargasso Sea; “Corso del Fiume dell Amazoni†showing the course of the Amazon River decorated with scenes of the more violent aspects of local culture. From the celebrated library of the Earls of Macclesfield at Shirburn Castle, Oxfordshire, England, accumulated from the early 18th century by generations of of the Parker family, and sold (over successive sales) by Sothebys. The first Earl of Macclesfield was Thomas Parker, 1st Baron Parker, made Viscount Parker, of Ewelm in the County of Oxford, and Earl of Macclesfield, in the County Palatine of Chester in 1716. He was Lord Chief Justice of the Queen’s Bench from 1710 to 1718 and Lord High Chancellor from 1718 to 1725. Probably acquired by Thomas Augustus Wolstenholme Parker, 6th Earl of Macclesfield (17 March 1811 - 24 July 1896) Conservative Member of Parliament for Oxfordshire from 1837 until 1841.
