Central American Republic Counterstamped 2 Reales 1846 AG3 NGC, San Jose mint, KM-Unl. Host: United States 25 Cents 1821; Counterstamp: Type V bi-facial sun over mountains and Ceiba tree. The stamping of 1, 2, 4 and 8 Reales was authorized by decree in Costa Rica on October 15, 1846 to distinguish them from circulating counterfeits. An extreme rarity from the highly contested counterstamped series of Costa Rica, and while the Type V marks are readily available at market, those featuring a capped bust United States quarter are nearly unheard of, with only a single other 2 Reales reaching auction in the last two decades. With this in mind, we expect fervent bidding when finally crossing the auction block. HID10510052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
