Costa Rican Diquis Carved Basalt Head

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Diquis culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A fine, hand-carved head presenting a thick neck and triangular visage with semicircular eyes beneath a straight brow, a prominent nose with wide nostrils, and full lips. A pair of C-shaped ears flank the intriguing countenance, while an incised band adorns the top of the head. Diquis stone sculptures, like this example, are admired for the abstract, geometric style. Red-hued earthen deposits envelope the surface of the sculpture, nicely complementing the rough grey basalt. Size: 3.7" W x 4.4" H (9.4 cm x 11.2 cm); 6.4" H (16.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA collection; ex-Robert Fielder collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; ex-Dewey-Price Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; ex-Vincent Price private collection, California, USA, 1960s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
