Costa Rican Greenstone Avian Celt Pendant

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. An interesting celt pendant that is hand-carved from mottled, sage green stone depicting an abstract avian figure. The mesmerizing bird effigy features a triangular head with shallow drilled eyes, a bulging beak, and a projecting crest, and the angular shoulders gradually expand to form the rounded blade base. This celt was perhaps worn as a pendant via a biconically drilled suspension hole bored through the neck. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired between the 1970s and 1990s; ex-John Montovan collection, Dekalb, Illinois, USA

Condition Report: Repairs to head and one shoulder, with very light adhesive residue along break lines. Light encrustations and softening to some facial details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
