Costa Rican Pottery Tripod Rattle Vessel w/ Lizards

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $300**

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya area, ca. 600 to 1100 CE. An impressive pottery jar supported by 3 lizard effigy legs, each positioned with heads facing toward the flared rim, as though their spiked bodies are slithering up the vessel. Six frog or lizard heads additionally protrude from the corseted neck of the jar, while a pair of petite reptilian or avian zoomorphic handles connect the slanted shoulder to the broad rim. Each hollow leg contains a clapper allowing the vessel to double as a rattle. Lizards frequently appear in Costa Rican art, strongly suggesting the supernatural import of these creatures in ancient times. Size: 6" L x 6" W x 6.8" H (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#183754
Condition Report: Still functions as a rattle. Chipping to rim and in a few small areas of exterior and surface wear commensurate with age with nicks and abrasions as shown. Otherwise, intact with an excellent presentation and good remaining detail. Light earthen deposits in areas.
