County of Devon - Gallon
A Victorian brass alloy Imperial Gallon measure for the County of Devon, dated 1895
by W. & T. Avery Ltd., numbered 972, engraved with date and county. Earliest legible verification mark for 1895, and with crowned VR cypher. Diameter 19.5cm (width 26cm including handles) (1)
This was one of a full set of Standards issued to W. Curtis, Inspector, on New Year's Eve 1847. The other set issued that day was to Carmarthen County. The date seems to have been added to the earlier measure, presumably in 1895 - the engraving style is slightly different to that of the county script.
Postage: Not Postable
Condition Report:
There are typical minor scuffs / dents / scratches and marks. Not all stamped marks are mentioned in the cataloguing, and some may be indistinct / rubbed.
Probably re-lacquered and possibly re-finished
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any specific questions.
Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition and finish.
