Taken in short-hand by Mr. W.B. Gurney, London: Gale, Curtis, and Fenner, 2nd edition, 1814, half title, folding table, publisher's catalogue at end, a little light spotting, original boards, rebacked, some edge wear, 8vo, with 2 others: A Plain Statement of Facts, relative to Sir Eyre Coote: containing the official correspondence and documents connected with his case, and the proceedings of the Military Board appointed for its investigation, 1816, and The Proceedings of a General Court Martial, held at Warley Camp, the 18th Day of July, 1781, upon Captain Thomas Bridge Littell, and Captain Thomas Baxter Aveling of the Cambridgeshire Regiment of Militia, 1782

(Quantity: 5)

The first two inquiries concern the events around the controversial Convention of Cintra, a treaty which enabled cut off French troops in Portugal to be evacuated after Sir Arthur Wellesley had defeated them at the Battle of Vineiro. Sir Hew Dalrymple and Sir Harry Burrard had arrived at that point and superseded Wellesley, and not wishing to antagonise the French agreed terms and nearly 21,000 French troops were transported by the Royal Navy to Rochefort in France in October 1808. This went down badly to say the least in Britain and although they were cleared at the inquiry, Dalrymple and Burrard, old men now, were quietly pensioned off.
