"Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World", 1885 edition, published and copyright by George F. Cram, Chicago, 1883. The distributor imprint of Hudgins & Talty on the bottom of the title page.

George Franklin Cram (1842-1928) was an American map publisher. He served in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War and then joined his uncle Rufus Blanchard's Evanston map business in 1867. Two years later, he became sole proprietor of the firm and renamed it the George F. Cram Co. which became a leading map firm and the first American firm to publish a world atlas. Cram achieved a large nation-wide success by adopted a cerography printing technique ["relief line engraving"] in the 1880s with the introduction of "Cram's Universal Family Atlas of the World".

There are over 100 full page and double-page maps; illustrations of Flags of All Nations, Animal and Vegetable Life of the Different Zones, Races of Man, a map of the Solar System, statistics on Comparative Wealth of States, Population & Area information, Chronological Outline of American History from 986 to 1885; portraits of U.S. Presidents. Political Parties of United States, Index.

Condition Report: Hard Boards, original publisher's cloth, gilt stamped front board and blind stamped backboard, "1885" is imprinted on the front board [some wear, especially the edges]; collector's leather spine with 5 raised bands, folio, 11.1/2” x 14”; floral decorated endpapers are creased at the hinges and have some edge wear; the title page show some edge wear and blank edge damages [see photo]; 200 pages, some soiling and wear, a few small creases, all maps are present; good/+ condition.
