Cross (2) - Walnut - 1850-1900

[ translate ]

Pair of wooden sculptures depicting Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John, part of a crucifixion group, height of the sculptures 32 cm, overall height 35 cm, overall width 32 cm, depth 13 cm.
The two figures are carved in wood and represented in a moving pose and in a symmetrical position, one facing left and the other right. The Virgin of Sorrows turns her head upwards to the left, her arms almost extended in the opposite direction, the fingers of her hands intertwined. She is wrapped in a cloak that falls to her feet. The figure of Saint John, also with his head raised, is turned to the right and has his hands clasped in prayer, the mantle falls over part of the tunic, which leaves the ankles tightened by the sandals exposed. The half-closed eyes are turned downwards. Both figures are placed on a naturalistic base rounded at the front. The two devotional statuettes are characterized by a contrapuntal movement: the raised head, the clenched hands, the right leg stretched forward of the Virgin, caught in an attitude of intimate pain, correspond to the raised face, the converging arms, the hidden right leg of the 'Evangelist, caught in all his desperation.
