Invitation card, Crystal Palace, The Directors Request the Honour of the Attendance of Professor Owen at the Ceremony of the Opening of the Palace by Her Majesty, on Saturday the 10th June, printed invitation card, some very minor marks, approx. 12.5 x 18.5 cm, tipped into Great Exhibition, The Illustrated Exhibitor, A Tribute to the World's Industrial Jubilee; comprising Sketches, by Pen and Pencil, of the Principal Objects in the Great Exhibition of the Industry of all Nations, 1851, London: John Cassell, [1851], folding wood engraved frontispiece and numerous wood engraved illustrations and folding plates, occasional spotting and light dust-soiling, contemporary half calf, gilt decorated spine, repaired at head & foot of spine, 8vo

The invitation card to Professor Owen is very likely to refer to the pioneering palaeontologist Professor Richard Owen (1804-1892) who designed and supervised the construction of the Crystal Palace Dinosaur models of Extinct Animals. The models were the first prehistoric animals ever built and came only around thirty years after dinosaurs were discovered. Professor Owen also produced an illustrated ?Handbook to the Extinct Animals and Geological Illustrations Described? for the Crystal Palace Company.
