Curie, Marie (1867-1934) Signed Photograph and Autograph Note Signed, 1921. Henri Manuel's (1874-1947) black-and-white photographic portrait of Curie in a patterned blouse and dark jacket, signed and inscribed by the sitter in the bottom blank margin, "To Mrs. Roger Williams, with the best wishes of M. Curie," photographer's signature (likely photographically reproduced) below the image, the photo mounted in the original heavy brown paper folder; [together with] a postcard from the Faculte des Sciences de Paris, Institut du Radium, Laboratoire Curie; New York, 23 June 1921, to the same recipient: "Dear Mrs. Williams, Before leaving United States, I write to thank you for your hospitality and your thoughtfulness for me and my Daughters. I have enjoyed the pleasant apartment which you were kind enough to place at my disposal. Very sincerely yours, M. Curie"; photograph slightly rippled from the mount, the paper a deep ivory color. (2)

In 1921 Marie Curie made her first visit to the United States accompanied by her two daughters Irène and Eve. During the trip she was presented with a gram of radium as a gift for research purposes by President Warren Harding at the White House. Signed photographs of Curie are very rare on the market; signed group shots also outnumber signed portraits. Only one other signed portrait of the scientist appears in the auction record.
