Custom Mounted North Coast Peruvian Textile Sash
Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, probably Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A very large and colorful fringed textile sash presenting numerous diagonal registers of repeated interlocking bird motifs comprised of finely woven camelid fibers in rose red, yellow ochre, grey, black, and white hues, the fringed border in golden yellow. Attractively mounted on a large pale gold fabric over canvas wrapped around wooden stretcher bars. A wonderful composition that demonstrates fine artistry of the ancient Peruvians, replete with meaningful symbolism; in the Pre-Columbian world, birds were revered sky animals and believed to act as messengers between humankind and deities of the celestial realm. Condition Report: One end of sash is separated from the rest, but nicely displayed with a folded edge. Minor stains, frayed, loose, and lost fibers as shown, nevertheless a very strong example overall.
