Cy Hungerford (1889-1983)

[ translate ]

Cy Hungerford Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (Post-Gazette, c. 1940s). Hungerford depicts modern-day warfare as a cudgel, wielded by a Hitler-faced ape, capable of "Turning Back the Clock a Few Thousand Years" (per the artist's caption). The allegorical clock, of course, is labeled as Civilization. Slapstick master Hungerford turned from pure humor to spend the 1940s as one of the more ferocious political cartoonists. He produced Allied defense posters as a sideline. The exaggerated style made Hungerford's political broadsides all the more bracing. An editorial note (lower margin) designates the cartoon as a rush job for the following Saturday's bulldog edition of the Post-Gazette. The archaic term bulldog once referred to the earliest press run of an issue, back when newspapers were produced with care and timely diligence. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.25" x 16". Moderate toning, spot-staining, retouching, and handling wear. Very Good condition. HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
