Cypriot Redware Juglet w/ Target Motifs

Ancient Greece, Cyprus, Cypro-Archaic I Period, Type IV, ca. 700 to 600 BCE. A beautiful pottery juglet enveloped in a vibrant red pigment with characteristic Cypriot target motif decoration hand-painted in black. Boasting an elegant form, the graceful vessel presents an ovoid body that tapers to a cylindrical neck, a flared rim, and an arched handle connecting neck to shoulder, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. A series of target designs adorn the jar organized into vertical columns with 1 group of 3, 2 groups of 2, and a singular target pattern below the handle. The handle is embellished by horizontal striations while several circular bands line the neck and rim. Size: 3.4" Diameter x 5.5" H (8.6 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
