D'ANVILLE, Jean Baptise Bourguignon (1697-1782). Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, de la Tartarie Chinoise et du Thibet. The Hague: Henri Scheurleer, 1737.

The first authoritative Western atlas of China. Jean-Baptiste du Halde’s 4-volume Description… de L’empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie Chinoise had appeared in 1735, with maps ‘based on surveys made by Jesuit missionaries between 1708 and 1716, for the Emperor k’ang Hsi’ (NMM). These maps, brilliantly executed by D’Anville, the royal geographer, were then re-engraved and issued in a separate atlas in Paris by Dezauche and in The Hague by Scheurleer (as above). Besides depicting China in unprecedented detail, this was the first Western atlas to depict Tibet and a separate Korea. Cordier 48-49; Lowendahl 401; NMM 3, 198; cf. Phillips, Atlases 3189; Shirley BL T.HALD-3A.

Folio (522 x 345mm). Title in red and black, 42 engraved maps of which 3 folding, 10 double-page, some coloured in outline by a contemporary hand (faint marginal stains in first few leaves). Contemporary half calf over boards, gilt title on spine (expertly restored).
