Author:
Title: DARK MYSTERIES No. 14
Place Published:
Publisher:Story, aka Master/Merit [Indicia: Master Comics, Inc.]
Date Published: October, 1953
Description:

CGC certified: G/VG (3.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Hy Fleishman. No writer credits. Art: Hy Fleishman, A.C. Hollingsworth, Jon D'Agnostino. GPAnalysis: No recorded sales in this grade. A 3.5 sold for $$114 in November 2019.

Master/Merit's most prolific horror cover artist was Hy Fleishman, whose unmistakable animated skeletons had the physicality of flesh (note the beefy right arm of the stiff in the foreground). After the Comics Code kiboshed horror, Fleishman launched a weekly kiddie comic with Charles Biro ("Poppo of the Popcorn Theater"), which flopped after 13 issues. Fed up, Fleishman opened a Howdy Beef Burger franchise and spent the rest of his professional life slinging chow. A year before his death in 2020, Fleishman attended his first and only comic convention (Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC). Photos of the event show a feisty Fleishman looking pleased that his artistic efforts 50 years prior were remembered fondly by fans.

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
