D'Anville - Géographie Ancienne Abrégée - 1768

Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, also written Danville, is a French geographer and cartographer, born July 11, 1697 in Paris (France) where he died on January 28, 1782. He is the brother of the artist Hubert-François Gravelot , famous engraver and illustrator, who created a large number of the cartridges for his cards.

He was elected to the Academy of Sciences of Saint Petersburg in 1748, in France to the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres in 1754 and to the Academy of Sciences in 1773.

For the record, D’Anville was one of the scientists who disagreed with Newton, arguing that the Earth was ovoid (egg-shaped) and not flattened at the poles.

Superb full calfskin bindings, ribbed spines and decorated boxes, finely executed restorations. All red edges. Fresh interior, complete with frontispiece and 11 cards: volume 1, 7 cards; volume 2, 3 maps and volume 3, 1 map. Small tears in places without major damage to the cards.
