DECORATIVE JAPANESE MATCHLOCK CARBINE.
Cal. 30. S# NSN. The 13" tapered octagon barrel with pronounced flare to muzzle is engraved overall with dragons, scrolls and some floral highlights; eyes, teeth and other selective bits are inlaid in gold. Simple matchlock with cocking sear has file decorated iron dog. Lockplate is brass. Hardwood stock appears to be of live oak and extends to within 1-1/2" of muzzle. It is inlaid with engraved brass decoration consisting of large chrysanthemum on left side of butt and with smaller blooms scattered. Trigger at bottom does not seem to operate lock and flash pan with pivoting cover does not appear to connect with bore. CONDITION: good to fine. Engraving on barrel sharp but hard to see due to overall light rust. Stock retains most original finish. Brass mounts have considerable green tarnish. (01-29784/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
